The CSIRO reportedly have millions of unidentified flora and fauna specimens, particularly insects, waiting to be formally identified by scientists. They estimate it would take 350 years to identify all 15 million samples!
So they are planning to use AI and machine learning to help identify the unnamed samples.
They digitise their collections to share with overseas counterparts but now they are going to test some AI programs to see if they can refine their identification processes.
